Sauce (pronounced sau-ooce)is a russian fine artist's drawing crayon popular during the Renaissance. It is slightly similar to pastel or conte, but with it's own unique feel and texture. Primarily black and white, with warm and cool grays, the sticks have a slightly greasy feel, yet contain no grease. They glide on like velvety silk, and can layer in ways that pastel cannot, for rich depth and subtlety. As a medium for life drawing, it's wonderful!
